Sukalyan Kumar Kundu is a Selection Grade-I Professor and former Chairman of the Department of Pharmacy at Jahangirnagar University, where he has taught and supervised research since 2001. He completed his B.Pharm (Honours) and M.Pharm at Jahangirnagar University, finishing first in his honours class, and earned his PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Niigata University, Japan, as a Japanese Government (MEXT) scholar.
His doctoral research with Prof. Takashi Saku examined how lymphatic vessels are involved in the formation of mucous retention cysts and produced immunohistochemical protocols for diagnosing mucoceles. Postdoctoral fellowships followed at Jadavpur University, India, and at the University of Fukui and the Wakasa Wan Energy Research Center in Japan, where he worked with Dr. Norio Miyoshi on combining sonodynamic and photodynamic therapy against cancer.
Since 2012 he has led a multidisciplinary group that brings together wet-lab pharmacognosy, in vivo animal models and computational methods. The group's work on hepatoprotective medicinal plants, sustained-release formulations and receptor-targeted molecular docking has produced more than 80 peer-reviewed papers in journals published by ACS, Wiley, Sage and Elsevier. He currently supervises 11 PhD dissertations and has guided more than 60 MS and 70 honours theses.
Outside the laboratory he has served two elected terms on the Jahangirnagar University Senate, sat on the Council of the Bangladesh Medical Research Council, and coordinated the university's COVID-19 Monitoring and Prevention Cell. He is a registered A-grade pharmacist and a regular voice on medicine safety for public audiences in Bangladesh.
